Chapter 1
In the silence of the car with only the hum of tires on asphalt, Shane slid a glance toward Tris. He'd woken up with her wound around his body and a throbbing erection. When she'd peeled her eyes open, her smile had been bright and unguarded, but that hadn’t lasted long. She'd shuttered the expression and made an escape for the shower.
At first, he worried he'd screwed up again. Last night had been some otherworld shit. The way she responded to him. He was surprised he'd been able to hold onto his control. He'd never experienced anything like that with anyone before. But now she wasn't speaking, and it freaked him out. He'd do just about anything for a snarky comment right about now.
He'd tried teasing her out of her seemingly melancholic mood, but she hadn't bitten. He was worried that she regretted her decision to come with him. To let someone like him touch her. She'd decided she wanted normal and boring and not all fucked in the head. Fuck. Well it was better to rip the band-aid off than sit here staring at her, willing her to talk.
"Go ahead and say it, you'll feel better."
Tris turned in her seat to slide a look over him. Jesus. A simple look from her, and he was throbbing in his jeans. The ache in his balls made him grind his teeth together.
"What?"
He raised an eyebrow. "The thing you've been dying to say the moment you woke up this morning. You'll feel better after you say it. This way, it'll just eat at you."
Tris sucked in a deep breath and Shane ground his teeth together. This was going to hurt. He could tell. He didn't want to hear it, but he needed to. He was the moron. He'd gone and caught a case for the girl he was supposed to be protecting. Rookie mistake. It was a heightened situation that made him think he was in love. It wasn't real, so he'd risked everything for nothing.
"I-I-don't know what to say. Last night..." Her voice trailed.
"Come on, Tris. Just say it. Last night was fun, but you don’t want to do it again. You've thought about it, and I'm not who you want. You want someone nice and normal and less intense. Or let me guess, now that I've touched you, you're bored?"
Tris blinked at him several times. "Is that what you think?"
Shit. He sounded like a whiney kid who'd gotten his heart stomped on. Get it together, Shane. He dropped his voice. "I—don’t know what to think. You shut down on me earlier, so I've been imagining the worst, and I sort of need you to put me out of my misery."
Her dark eyes softened, and she dragged in a deep breath. "I've been trying to figure out how to say thank you."
He slid her a fleeting glance then passed two cars on his left, sliding in front of the lead car before giving his attention back to her. "Thank you?" That was the last thing he’d expected to hear.
She nodded and fiddled with the braid she'd tucked her hair into. "I've never..." Her voice trailed, and she started again. "I've never done or experienced anything like that before. I felt like I was on fire. My whole body. I just—I didn't know it could be like that. And you didn't..." She blinked rapidly. "And I know you didn't..."
It took him several seconds to process what she was saying. When he spoke, his voice was thick and raw. "No, I didn't. Last night was about you. But make no mistake, I wanted to go down on you, Tris. I love your flavor. I could have kept going all night if you'd let me."
He couldn't be sure, since he had to keep his eyes on the road, but he would swear she flushed.
"I, uh, I wanted to have a turn."
Shit. Just the image of her with those full lips wrapped around his— He swerved to avoid a truck. "Tris, I don't need you to—"
She licked her lips again. His brain buzzed. What was he saying again?
"I know you didn't..."
"Tris. You were perfect. That was perfect. I didn't need you to do any more." Problem was now that she'd said it, it was all he could think about.
She nodded thoughtfully. "I'd like to try it, if you don’t mind. Like if you're okay with it."
If he was—Yes, fucking please. "If I'm okay with it?” He ran a hand through his hair. "Jesus, Tris. I'm okay with it. I’m going to fantasize about that probably for months now."
"Why do you have to fantasize? I've just been working up the courage to ask you if I could. That's why I've been quiet all morning. I-I want to taste you too. I meant what I said about you teaching me. Will you let me?"
His cock pulled tight in his shorts, and he bit out a curse. "Tris..."
She reached over the console and slid her hands over his thigh. Fuck. Oh fuck. Oh fuck. Oh fuck. His hips jerked involuntarily, and she smiled. She wasn't trying to be beguiling or attempting for sexy. But that look on her face—innocence and lo
nging and completely unguarded—made him want to pull over to a rest stop and screw her in the car. Forget making things special for her.
Tris undid his belt easily, and his button came next. All the while, she focused intently on her task. He wanted to watch, but he needed his eyes on the fucking road. He saw the sign for a rest stop in three miles. He could hold on that far, right?
Wrong.
When she reached inside his boxers and her fingers wrapped around his cock, his vision blurred.
"A-am I doing this right?"
"Yes," he ground out. "Just like—ahhh."
She pulled him out and stroked him. Shane got more creative with his expletives as her thumb traced over the head of his cock.
His hips jerked again, and he groaned. "Tris. I..." What was he trying to say? His brain had had something on deck, but he couldn't remember it now.
Her braid flopped over her shoulders as she leaned farther to tentatively lick the drop of pre come off his dick. Oh shit. He wasn't going to make it. The tingling took hold in his spine.
But maybe he would make it, because the sensation of her wrapping her lips over the broad tip, then using her tongue to lubricate her way as she slid farther down taking more of him was so close to heaven he never wanted it to stop. She pulled back with her mouth then used her hand to slide down his cock, making his skin tighter and heightening the sensations. Fire. She'd doused him in kerosene and lit the spark.
In his peripheral vision, he saw the sign for the rest stop and swerved to pull off. He pulled the car over and slid into a parking spot far away from all the other cars. The windows were tinted, but like hell he wanted any nosy onlookers.
Once he parked, Shane slid his hands into her curls. She moaned slightly as he gently guided her. "Tris, I'm not...."
She pulled back. "Show me what you like, Shane. I want to do this right."
He pulled her up gently and kissed her full and deep. When he pulled back, her eyes were hazy, and she blinked at him dreamily.
"Please."
Hell. "Okay." He swallowed hard. "Use both hands."
She complied readily. Last night, he’d thought he'd never be turned on like that again in his life. He'd been wrong.
"Tighter. I'm more sensitive at the tip, so you don't have to be too gentle."
When she adjusted her grip, his eyes crossed.
"Like that?" she asked.
Shane dropped his head back against the headrest. "Fuck, yes."
When she returned her mouth, his hips cocked, and she took him deep. Her tongue was so hot. She hollowed out her cheeks as she sucked him deep, and he gritted his teeth, groaning as she worked him. Stroking him at the same time with her hands and her tongue.
The tingling started to roll up his back, and he tapped her on her neck. "Baby, I'm going to come." He indicated the glove compartment. “The tissues are in there."
A small frown marred her smooth forehead. "You don’t want me to swallow?"
Oh. My. God. "Swall—you want to?"
She met his gaze. "I want to. I want to give you what you gave me. Will you let me?"
Shane didn't have much to say in that anymore. His body had taken over. His hips ticked up again, and she took him into her mouth, smoothly sucking him in and stroking with her hands.
The wave of bliss slammed into him hard and fast, taking over all his motor functions. Wiping his mind clear of all thought, making his vision dim.
He wasn't sure how long he sat there unable to move, think, or see, but slowly, his mental faculties returned, and he turned to stare at Tris. She looked worried, and he tugged her forward, to press a kiss to her lips.
"Was that what you wanted?” he asked. “Me completely at your mercy, losing my control?"
She nodded slowly.
"In that case, you should be very proud of yourself because I'm not entirely sure this isn't heaven. And we're not going to be going anywhere for a while. You might have broken me."
With a giggle, she said, "I bet you say that to all the girls. Especially the rank novices."
He used a knuckle to swipe a loose curl off her cheek. "What other girls?"
Chapter 2
Tris waited outside her room and took several deep breaths. She and Shane had worked out some logistics for seeing each other on the rest of the drive home. For obvious reasons they couldn't do the normal couple things. But he'd stopped at a coffee shop a couple of miles from campus, and they'd made a running date to meet there.
If she was truthful with herself, she wasn’t exactly ready for a public relationship. Her father would find out, and then it would get really ugly with him running background checks on Shane, and if he didn't approve, he would stop at nothing to break them up. First step being yanking her ass out of school. Or worse, saddling her with a nonstop security detail that made it impossible to see Shane.
They'd kissed goodbye at the coffee shop, and he'd looked like he didn't want to let her go. Okay, so maybe things had gotten a little carried away with both of them panting and desperate for more touching.
She’d had plenty of time to think on that car ride home. She was not screwing this up and going all needy-girl on him. Last night had been the most intense thing she’d ever experienced. He’d been able to touch her deep in her heart where no one else even came close to reaching.
She'd never thought of herself as sexual, but she'd been right about Shane. He did something to her that made her libido stand up and want to go for a serious workout. When he'd parked at the dorm, she went in first and knew he was just behind her, but it still didn't stop her from wanting to hold his hand or snuggle into him like she'd done at the show. But this was the real world, and no doubt Xia and Sydney were waiting for her.
The moment she opened her door, Sydney pounced. "Oh my God. Finally. Tell me everything. Have we ditched the V card at last? How was he? I mean he looks like he can bone. Can he bone? Please tell me he knows how to put those big hands to some use. Not that I'm fantasizing about your man or anything, but those hands of his give a girl ideas. Wait, why aren't you walking funny? If I had that boy to myself for a whole weekend, I would be in a wheelchair."
Tris laughed. She'd missed her girls.
Xia sat on her bed, laptop open and said, "What? I've been waiting too. Leave nothing out."
"Oh, you guys want to hear about the concert." Tris tossed her overnight bag onto her bed. "Snoop killed it. And Lauren Hill was awesome. Her MC skills are still on point. Puts that Igloo Australia girl to shame. Dido made an appearance, and Imagine Dragons was so nice. We had backstage passes."
Xia sat up straighter. "Shut up! We will get back to how you met Dan Reynolds of Imagine Dragons and didn't call me right away to tell me. First things first, though. Did Shane invite you to his tent?"
Tris laughed as she yanked out her toiletry bag.
Xia snatched it out of her hand. "Girl, you better sit down and tell us the story properly. No distractions. Unpacking can wait."
Tris had expected this, but it still made her laugh. As she walked them through the whole sexual tension-filled weekend, they oohed and ahhed at the right places. And stared in awe as she gave the general gist of the good parts. When she finished, she sat back. "So now we're back, and I have no idea how this is going to go."
"Well, I for one am so freaking excited for you." Sydney nodded exuberantly. “I mean, you went after what you wanted and owned it. I love it. Bad ass."
Xia chewed her lip and nodded slowly. "Syd is right, babes, you're discovering your inner sexual dragon, and I'm proud of you. I just want you to be careful. This whole thing can blow back on the two of you, so you need to be cautious."
"I hear you, Xi. And I am. But right now it's fun, and we're seeing how it goes. No major labels, but we're together."
“And how do you feel about him?” Syd asked.
That was the easy part. “Excited. Giddy. I want to see him all the time. I want him touching me all the time. But more than that, I want to talk to him all the ti
me. I mean he’s smart, and funny, and doesn’t seem to mind that I need my gossip blogs almost as much as I need coffee. And he makes me feel free.” Her heart swelled. She was totally falling for him. Had fallen for him. But she would not be making any crazy declarations. Slow, they were taking it slow. She could enjoy for now.
Xia flopped back onto Sydney's bed. "I am so jealous. Does he have an equally hot friend?"
Trist immediately thought of War. "Well, he has his friend Warrick. You might remember him from the club that night, but I think he has a girlfriend."
"Curse of my life."
Tris's phone rang, and she saw her father's name on the caller ID. She'd had specific numbers forwarded to her new phone. "Hi, Daddy."
"How's my baby doing?"
Her jaw ached from clenching it so hard. "I'm hardly a baby, Dad."
"I guess you'd be right about that." He sighed. "Are you okay, you don't need anything?"
"I'm good." She considered telling him about the concert, but if she did, he'd flip out. "Just been working and hanging with friends. Ricca is keeping me busy too."
He made a snorting noise. "Why you need to work is beyond me. I would give you everything you need."
"Dad, you can’t take care of me my whole life. I'm a grown-up. And I like to work. It makes me feel good. I thought you'd be proud of me."
"I am. I just wish you didn't have to expose yourself. But it's your cousin, so I trust her to keep you safe when you're with her."
"Ricca is a responsible adult. And I'm good. Thriving."
"Okay, fine. Don't be mad at an old man for wanting to protect his little girl. It's just hard for me."
